Netgear completes its Wi-Fi mesh offer with a new model Orbi router, significantly smaller than the old ones. The kits RBK12 (two modules) and RBK13 (three modules) are not going to be as powerful as the units, which are marketed by the company already, plus they won’t cover as much area, as the previous devices. However, they can still be enough for a good part of a house.
According to the manufacturer, the version with three modules can cover an area up to 250 square meters, good enough for the majority of apartments and even houses. The company has made a few necessary changes to these units to make them more efficient in terms of internet speed and range. Slight changes to the design have also been made, and now, the devices look a lot more aesthetically appealing.
Compared to the "big" Orbi, these new modules only work on two bands (one in 2.4 GHz and one in 5 GHz), against three. The maximum bit rate announced is 1.2 Gbps and it is always Wi-Fi 5, not the new standard managed by the iPhone 11. Remember that this is a theoretical bitrate, in practice, it will probably be a lot lower, but still enough for the 4K and all common uses, says the manufacturer. Another limitation to plan, the satellites do not integrate Ethernet port; they are necessarily connected to the main router in Wi-Fi.
In return for this inferior performance, these new models are much more discreet and can be left more easily on a corner of a bookshelf or desk. The main router and the satellites form a square about 5 cm square and weigh around 250 g.
Netgear did not cut through the features and services associated with routers. Everything is configured via an iOS or Android app; you can create a separate network for your guests, configure certain settings using Alexa and enjoy additional protection with the Netgear Armor subscription. This subscription is free for a year and after that, you will have to pay a yearly cost for the subscription.
The price is also lower, with a base price of $129 for the RBK12, sufficient for 200 square meters, according to Netgear. The RBK13 will be sold at $229.99. Both models should be available from the end of the month at the usual dealers. Amazon lists the RBK13, but it is not possible to pre-order a copy for the moment.
