Routers are getting more and more stylish and Netgear has gotten in on this. And in addition to having this different format, the company's new router, called Orbi, wants to become the brain of your home internet, exploring solutions used by Google with OnHub and other smaller startups like Eero and Luma.
It is the first tri-band router of mesh networks, which uses two (or more) routers to cover the entire home with Wi-Fi signal. Like dual-band routers, Orbi has an 802.11ac standard, supports speeds up to 3Gbps and can switch between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands to always deliver the best signal.
The difference is in the third band, which is also 5 GHz, but is exclusive for connecting to other Orbi routers. The idea is to free up bandwidth, as the router would not need to communicate through the bands that are used for the internet. It goes something like this:
It also has some LEDs that light up at the top where you can check the network status. Blue means everything is fine. Red means something is wrong. After you make all the settings, the lights go out unless something has gone wrong.
Netgear Orbi is definitely the future of routers because the kind of technology it is equipped with seems to find no tough competition as of now and not in the near future as well. Netgear Orbi has the ability to provide users with wider and stronger internet signals in and out of the house.
With everything being so great about this device, there is just one downside to it as per many people, i.e., the price of the router, which many found to be quite expensive. When the model launched, people were surprised to know that the company is charging as high as $400 for two Orbi routers, which consist of a router and a satellite. In case, someone wants to buy just a single device, then that will be available at $250, which is also quite expensive given that it is just a router.
However, people don’t realize that the purpose behind launching a product like Orbi is to cover the whole house with a good Wi-Fi signal, so maybe it is OK for the company to charge that much. Nevertheless, Orbi shows that creating a mesh network in your home might not be a bad idea.
