WPA2, you might have heard this term in the network terminology. This is secured as long as the WPS is disabled. Nevertheless to say, WPS is a great feature but using it always can be mistake.
Your Netgear Orbi router supports WPS which is enabled by default. Like UPnP, this is also an insecure feature that makes it prone to online attacks and viruses.
What is a Wi-Fi protected setup?
WPA2 with PSK is an acronym for Pre-shared key. This passphrase is used to connect the smart devices to the wireless network. This allows you to protect your network from being accessed by unauthorized users. This is a kind of encryption key to the network.
If you don’t want to enter the same passphrase again and again on new devices, then you can use the WPS feature. It is an easier method to connect the router to the smart devices.
How WPS is insecure?
You can implement the WPS in two different ways.
PIN: It is an eight-digit number you need to connect to the router. In this method, router checks the first 4 digits separately from last four. This makes easier for the user to guess the combinations. You can make a total of 11000 different possible codes. After bruiting the first four, the attacker can easily guess next 4 digits. Anyone can crack the WPS PIN using third-party software.
Push-button connect: Instead of keying in the PIN or passphrase, there is another method with the help of which you can connect the device to the network. This is called push button connect. Press the button from the router which allows only one device to connect at a time and for a temporary time period. This is bit secure and can’t be easily exploited. The only drawback is that one can easily press this button and connect to the network.
Is WPS disabling possible?
Depending on the type of router you have, the WPS disable function is available.
- There are some routers that don’t support WPS disabling. So, you can’t do so during configuration.
- Some routers have optional WPS disable. Though this option is not of much use and the WPS may remain to enable without your knowledge.
- In some router models, you will find either of the two options like you can disable or enable WPS at a time.
- In some routers, there is only WPS push button function enabled with PIN type disabled.
- Some routers don’t support WPS which are considered the best and safest one.
How to disable WPS?
To disable the WPS on your Orbi router, go to the web-based setup page and click on ‘WPS setup key’. Disable the PIN-based configuration and if possible disable WPS totally on the router to make it more secured.
Bizarre it may sound but this is the fact that keeping the WPS enabled on the router may unlock other insecure features like UPnP and other PIN-based authentications which are real threats to your network.
